Although it is almost always called “red factor”, this mutation is instead believed to be a variety of pied. SF individuals (pictured left) have a red band of feathers on their stomach, while DF individuals (pictured right) are completely red.
Many so-called “red factors” have no real gene for the mutation and were not born with red color. These individuals instead earn their random red feathers from follicle damage, disease, or poor diet. A true red factor MUST have the same waistband or full-body red found in the pictured birds.
This mutation is extremely well-known but also very rare. DFs may sell for as much as $100,000 USD due to their vibrant plumage and use in breeding.
